Behind the Brewery
Is Craft Beer Dead? Not Even Close.
After a 3,000-mile brewery road trip from Florida to Boston, the owner of Bullfrog Creek Brewing in Valrico weighs in on whether craft beer is dying.
I keep hearing people ask, “Is craft beer dead?”
After a 3,000-mile road trip from Florida to Boston, stopping at breweries along the way, my answer is simple: No way.
We visited some incredible breweries. The taprooms were busy, the beer was flowing, and people were excited to be there. We saw friends meeting for drinks, families having dinner, tourists checking out local beer, and regulars sitting at the bar talking to the staff. That doesn’t look like a dying industry to me. It looks like an industry that is still very much alive.
Is craft beer changing? Absolutely.
The days when someone could open a taproom, put eight average beers on the wall, and expect a crowd just because they were the only local brewery are probably over. Customers have more choices now, and their expectations are higher. They want good beer, good food, good service, a welcoming atmosphere, and a reason to come back.
Yes, breweries are closing. But businesses close in every industry, and it doesn’t always mean people have stopped wanting the product.
Breweries close because rent goes up. Ingredient and labor costs increase. Debt catches up. Partnerships fall apart. Locations don’t work. Owners burn out. Sometimes the beer isn’t good enough. Sometimes the experience isn’t good enough. Sometimes a business simply makes too many mistakes for too long.
That doesn’t mean craft beer is dead. It means running a brewery is hard.
People are drinking differently, not disappearing
People may be drinking differently. They may drink fewer beers in one sitting or mix in cocktails, wine, THC drinks, or nonalcoholic options. But they are still going out. They are still looking for places where they can relax, meet friends, watch a game, hear live music, eat good food, and feel connected to their community.
That is what the best breweries understand. They aren’t just selling beer. They are creating a place where people want to belong.
This road trip reminded me why I fell in love with this business in the first place. Every brewery had its own personality, its own story, and its own group of people who made it feel alive. You cannot experience that by grabbing a mass-produced case of beer from a grocery store shelf.
Craft beer isn’t dead.
The easy-money phase might be dead. The novelty of simply being “local” might be dead. Mediocre breweries being able to coast without adapting might be dead.
But great beer, genuine hospitality, strong communities, and memorable taprooms?
Those are thriving.
Craft beer isn’t disappearing. It is growing up.
To everyone who has supported Bullfrog Creek Brewing, and to everyone who continues to walk through our doors, order a pint, grab a meal, attend an event, bring a friend, or simply tell someone about us, thank you.
You are helping us prove every single day that craft beer is not dead!
